The Design of This Korean Office Building Is Seoul Good
Britain’s David Chipperfield Architects took a landmark Korean beauty product company and created a landmark building for its headquarters. Amorepacific was first established in 1945 and has occupied space in Seoul’s city centre since 1956. The company is South Korea’s largest in the cosmetic industry and the 14th largest in the world.
Something this big called for something this big.
The 30-storey building houses 25 floors of office space and four floors of galleries and restaurants for the general public. It features voids filled with trees and pools.
If you can picture three or four giant horseshoe shapes arranged in a stack in an alternating pattern, you now know what the Amorepacific building looks like. The structure is arranged around a central courtyard and three of the facades built into the stacked design open the building to the hustle and bustle of Seoul’s downtown core.
According to the architects, these voids serve as the platforms for “hanging gardens.” A larger void runs up the centre of the building which permits sunlight to enter office interiors. To give the sunlight a fighting chance at getting into some of the deeper office spaces the structure is clad in brise-soleil which acts as a deflector. It also gives the facade a pale, soft and hazy appearance.
Other amenities inside the building include an auditorium, childcare facilities and somewhere for customers to test the beauty products. There is also additional space for exhibitions and retailers.
You could say that the architects put their heart and Seoul into this project.
