Wrappers Delight Unwraps Sweet Memories
With the pressure in today’s world to control waste and to recycle as much as possible, it is refreshing to see something positive to come from hoarding. The hoarder in this case was a gentleman by the name of John Townsend who lived in Stockport, Manchester. Over the years, Townsend maintained a number of personal collections.
When he passed away in 2015, his family discovered that virtually every nook and cranny in the home, the garage, the summerhouse and the caravan parked outside contained boxes. But these were not boxes of junk. There were boxes of history that had been carefully preserved for the future.
In 2016 a fellow named Johnny Trunk started to go through the boxes with the assistance of Townsend’s sons. To say he had bit off more than he could chew would be an understatement. However, what Trunk found was a massive amount of product packaging items that dated as far back as the 1960s.
For advertising and graphic design buffs the collection is priceless. For fans of candies, drinks and treats from the past, it’s a waltz down memory lane. Who could forget Pacemakers, Fizz Bang or Cresta soft drinks?
So Trunk did what anyone else would have done if they stumbled onto such a collection – he saw the potential to immortalise these classic products and celebrate Townsend’s efforts by putting them in a book. Oddly enough, one without a wrapper.
Called ‘Wrappers Delight’ you get exactly as you would expect. It is a 240 page book featuring hundreds of wrappers, packets and other marketing objects that have been carefully photographed and reproduced for your pleasure.
It not only keeps alive the memories of many of these products that are no longer available, it demonstrates the progress made in product promotion and wrapping. That at the very least makes this book a really sweet deal!
